AirPlay keeps dropping
AirPlay dropping mid-practice is almost always a Wi-Fi problem, not an iPad or RepRecap problem. The fixes below are ordered cheapest to most-disruptive.
First, check the basics
- The iPad and the TV are on exactly the same Wi-Fi network. Many gyms have separate guest, staff, 2.4 GHz, and 5 GHz networks — verify both devices are on the same SSID.
- The iPad is not on a VPN. Some VPNs block AirPlay's local discovery protocol.
- The Apple TV (or smart TV) is awake and on the same input.
If it's intermittent
Most "keeps dropping" cases are caused by congested gym Wi-Fi. Other devices in the gym (phones, smartwatches, scoreboards, other tablets) are all competing for the same airtime.
Things to try:
- Move the iPad and the TV closer together if the gym is large. The iPad doesn't need a strong internet signal — it just needs the TV to be reachable.
- Switch both devices to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi if the gym has one (often a separate SSID like
Gym-5G). 5 GHz is less crowded but has shorter range. - Restart the Apple TV. Unplug, wait 10 seconds, plug back in. This clears whatever connection state was failing.
The reliable fallback: phone hotspot
If gym Wi-Fi keeps dropping, abandon it. Use your phone's personal hotspot as the local network for AirPlay:
- On your iPhone: Settings → Personal Hotspot → Allow Others to Join: ON.
- On the iPad: Settings → Wi-Fi, pick your iPhone's hotspot.
- On the Apple TV: Settings → Network → Wi-Fi, pick the same hotspot.
- Re-open Control Center on the iPad and start AirPlay mirroring.
This bypasses the gym's Wi-Fi entirely. AirPlay traffic stays between the iPad and the Apple TV — your phone isn't using any cellular data for this.
If it drops once but stays connected after reconnecting
If AirPlay drops, you reconnect, and it stays stable, the gym network is mostly fine but had a transient hiccup. There's not much to do about this except live with it. AirPlay reconnection is fast (a few seconds), and you can keep recording on the iPad through the dropout.
When it's the iPad, not the network
Rarely, the iPad's AirPlay protocol stack gets into a bad state and needs to be reset:
- Stop AirPlay on the iPad (Control Center → Screen Mirroring → Stop Mirroring).
- Force-quit RepRecap (swipe up from the bottom, hold, swipe up on the RepRecap card).
- Restart the iPad if the problem persists (hold power + volume, slide to power off, restart).
- Reopen RepRecap, start AirPlay again.
If this happens repeatedly with the same iPad in the same gym, the most likely fix is the hotspot fallback above.
